Harsco continues to deliver the highest-quality environmental management in its operations, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. We could not have achieved so much in 2021 without the dedication of more than 150 Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team members and colleagues across the Company.
The EHS team, supported by other Company colleagues and external consultants, uses environmental management systems to manage regulatory compliance, report environmental incidents across the Company’s operations and oversee corrective actions to address these incidents.
Tracking environmental performance across key performance indicators (KPIs) through regular audits of Harsco operations enables us to set goals and measure our progress. Building on our success in 2021, our efforts to reduce our company’s environmental impacts have continued in 2022.
In 2022, we are striving to improve energy efficiency by assessing opportunities to rely on renewable energy sources for our U.S. operations. We are working to reduce carbon emissions by evaluating our thermal treatment plants, which currently use carbon-intensive natural gas. Lastly, we are conducting a climate risk analysis to better understand how climate change might impact our business operations. These strategies support our long-term goal of reducing energy and carbon emissions intensity by 15% by 2025 as compared to our 2019 baseline.
