One of the most rewarding aspects of my career so far has been the daily opportunity to contribute to meaningful environmental change. Knowing that the effort I put into my work directly supports sustainability and positively impacts our environment gives me a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment.

How did your career start, and what has your work experience been?

My career in environmental compliance began with a bachelor’s degree in biology, where I gained a strong foundation in ecological systems. During this time, I completed an internship at the Philadelphia Zoo, which enhanced my passion for making a more significant, positive impact on the environment. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist. Seeking to deepen my expertise, I pursued a master’s in sustainability management in Washington, D.C. During my studies, I participated in a study abroad program in Sweden, where I partnered with an environmental company to support their project goals. Additionally, I worked to review scholarly papers and assist in organizing publications based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on responsible research. These experiences enhanced my analytical and organizational abilities. In this role, I have advanced my expertise in environmental compliance, permit management, and proactive problem-solving. Each step of my career has built on the previous one, enabling me to contribute effectively to sustainability and environmental protection.

Will you talk about your current role at Clean Earth?

In my current role as an Environmental Compliance Specialist at Clean Earth, I ensure that our soil and dredge facilities comply with all relevant environmental regulations and standards. This involves conducting thorough data analysis, monitoring compliance metrics, and implementing best practices to maintain high standards of environmental stewardship. I perform environmental site inspections and audits to verify adherence to local, state, and federal regulations. I also collaborate closely with various teams to address compliance challenges proactively, utilizing my background in biology and sustainability to develop innovative solutions. Together with my team members and other departments, I work diligently to uphold Clean Earth’s commitment to sustainable and responsible environmental management.

Are there any misconceptions people may have about your position?

A common misconception about my role as an Environmental Compliance Specialist is that it primarily involves handling paperwork behind a desk. While administrative duties are a part of my job, I also frequently visit different facilities to conduct site inspections and audits and assist with adherence to permit requirements. During these visits, I engage directly with team members and collaborate across departments to ensure compliance. This combination of desk work and on-site activities helps maintain our environmental standards and fosters strong professional relationships.

Let’s talk about some of the highlights of your career. What has been the most rewarding or meaningful part of your work experience thus far?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career so far has been the daily opportunity to contribute to meaningful environmental change. Knowing that the effort I put into my work directly supports sustainability and positively impacts our environment gives me a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment. Additionally, building connections with colleagues and stakeholders who share the same passion for environmental stewardship has been incredibly gratifying. Collaborating with like-minded individuals towards common goals not only enhances our collective impact but also fosters a supportive and inspiring work environment.

Empowering women in the environmental compliance industry is something I am passionate about, especially in my new role as one of the Enviri Women East Regional Co-Leads. I focus on creating a supportive space where women can listen to each other, share their experiences, engage in meaningful conversations, and support one another’s growth. By fostering a community of collaboration and mutual encouragement, we help each other navigate our career paths and overcome challenges.

How do you enjoy your time outside of work?

Outside of work, I engage in various creative and adventurous activities that help me maintain a balanced and fulfilling life. I actively explore different forms of art, taking on creative projects that allow me to express myself and enhance my portfolio. Scuba diving and paddle boarding are two of my favorite hobbies which offer me the opportunity to explore marine ecosystems and the underwater world, which deepens my appreciation for nature. I also enjoy experimenting with making fresh juices, soups, and spicy vegetarian dishes.

How do you empower other women in our industry? What advice do you want to share?

Empowering women in the environmental compliance industry is something I am passionate about, especially in my new role as one of the Enviri Women East Regional Co-Leads. I focus on creating a supportive space where women can listen to each other, share their experiences, engage in meaningful conversations, and support one another’s growth. By fostering a community of collaboration and mutual encouragement, we help each other navigate our career paths and overcome challenges. My advice to aspiring women in the industry is to stay curious, build strong networks, and support one another, as together we can drive positive change and achieve our goals.

Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at the start of your career?

If I could offer advice to my younger self at the start of my career, I would emphasize the importance of embracing continuous learning and staying curious. Lean into your interests and let that pull guide you, as our curiosity often leads to meaningful opportunities and deeper understandings of ourselves. I would also encourage myself to seek out mentors and actively build a strong professional network, as these relationships are invaluable for personal and professional growth. Although making the first move can feel daunting, taking the initiative can open doors and pave the way for new and rewarding paths.

How should we encourage the younger generation of women to join the waste industry?

I believe encouraging younger women to join the waste industry starts with educational outreach programs that showcase the diverse career opportunities available. Seeing and speaking to women in the field can bridge the gap, making the next generations’ aspirations feel attainable and it can help inspire them to pursue their dreams. By continuously supporting and empowering women through mentorship, training, and creating inclusive environments, we can work to ensure they have the confidence and resources needed to thrive in the waste industry.
